Charge Of The Light Brigade
Perhaps Tennyson’s most famous poem, it is his immediate response to a terrible incident at Sebastapol during the Crimean War when, due to a misunderstanding, a regiment of 600 men and horses were sent to retrieve weapons from the enemy’s base at the other end of a long valley. With riflemen and cannons directed at them from the hills either side this meant almost certain death. Incredibly, around half the men survived.
This recording features the voice of Alfred Lord Tennyson himself, as recorded onto wax cylinder by Thomas Edison.
Sweet and Low
This tender lullaby appears within the much longer poem ‘The Princess’. The singer is the wonderful and multi-talented Norwegian songstress Mari Persen.
